The artist: Katy Alston

Katy Alston graduated from W.S.C.A.D. at Farnham, Surrey, in 1988 and has painted ever since, either on a full time or part time basis whilst bringing up her children.

She prefers to work from memory, the subject matter is secondary to the idea of having somewhere she knows and then exploring it in her head. She often creates pictures of local villages and towns because of this.

Her main preoccupation is with the space within a picture and to this end she explores different view points, particularly from the air, and bends and shifts the subject accordingly. Map–making has developed from using these aerial views and she has now made more than five, celebrating the landscape of South Shropshire.

Katy likes to work in pen and ink, watercolour and coloured pencils, using paper and gesso as a ground.
