A south Shropshire artist has illustrated a brand new Ludlow riverside walk guide.
Katy Alston has illustrated the guide which is now available from Ludlow Visitor Information Centre. The colourful mini–guide shows two short circular walks both starting below the castle at the Mill on the Green. This new trails guide has been produced by Shropshire Council and funded by Advantage West Midlands as part of the investment in Ludlow’s businesses following the devastating effect of the flooding in 2007.
The first, shorter, walk takes the visitor along the Linney, past Mr Underhill’s, (one of Ludlow’s two Michelin starred restaurants) and then bears left over the River Corve and the water meadow where it meets the main road with the Unicorn pub clearly visible ahead. The walker can follow the loop back along the Linney pausing to gather some local information at St. Lawrence’s burial ground. At a gentle pace the circular walk takes around 45 minutes.
The second walk is a little longer and follows the path know as the Bread Walk along the bank of the River Teme and below Whitcliffe Common. This route goes past the Charlton Arms and offers an opportunity to look out for information panels explaining Ludlow’s unique geological heritage. The return route follows the old town wall on the opposite bank and walkers can divert into the town centre at any point along here or follow the road back to the Mill.
Councillor David Roberts, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for local environment and economy, said: “We hope this new guide will encourage people to both visit and explore Ludlow and take the opportunity to enjoy and support the town’s pubs and shops, as well as a wonderful walk.”
The guide indicates the location of riverside hospitality businesses such as the Cliffe Hotel, Unicorn Inn and Charlton Arms Hotel.
Katy is now working on a calendar featuring south Shropshire scenes, including the Ludlow walking guide map.
In collaboration with local artist Katy Alston from Wistanstow, The Gallery in Market Square has commissioned a large illustrated map of Bishops Castle.
The pen and watercolour map has been reprinted by Pearson Print in Craven Arms and is now on sale in the shop. Mrs Alston carried out a good deal of research so that she could feature all the landmark buildings, represent all the annual festivals, and surround the buildings with fields annotated with their ancient names.
The result is a detailed and attractive pictorial record of Bishops Castle as it is today, with backward glances at it's colourful past.
(Please note that as of February 2009 Pearson Print, mentioned in this article, is no longer trading from the premises in Craven Arms.)
